Sivan Lewin grew up in
London, England. She studied at the London School of Economics where
she co-edited the college newspaper. Afterhours, with her friends,
she organized warehouse parties and clubs and even had a stint on
pirate radio.
She dabbled briefly with tabloid journalism
then came to New York and started working in photography. After
three years as a photo assistant she returned to London to study
for an MA at The Royal College of Art.
Straight after college she won the John Kobal
Photographic Portrait Award. She spent a semester in Chicago at
the School of the Art Institute and came back to London and had
a one person show at the Photographer's Gallery. She also participated
in group shows in the UK, France and the Netherlands. She spent
three months on a young artist's residency, at the Nicéphore
Niépce Museum in France, making an installation based on
a camera obscura. She taught photography for a while as a part-time
lecturer at Bournemouth and Poole College and at the University
of Hertfordshire.
During her time in the UK Sivan worked as a
photographer for The World of Interiors, Wallpaper,
Tate magazine, The Sunday Telegraph Magazine and
British Vogue. In 2002 she moved back to New York where
she has enjoyed much success working for W, American
Vogue, House and Garden and The New York Times
Magazine.
Her commericial clients include: Barneys, Kate
Spade, Banana Republic, Anthropologie, Bergdorf Goodman and Nike.
